a single tree

a single tree stands
amidst a wasteland
as far as the eye can see
because man didn't listen.

nothing but desolation,
emptiness, is seen all around,
no semblance of life,
nothing but an arid plain.

it is now paradise lost,
no chirping of birds
no movement of wildlife,
nothing heard but the winds.

warnings were present
but no one listened.
old growth came down,
watersheds destroyed.

the habitats disappeared,
as did the animals
that inhabited them,
all because of man's greed.

the wolf is my messenger
