PETITION TO PRESIDENT BUSH for an EXECUTIVE ORDER FORBIDDING
FORCED EVICTIONS of TRADITIONAL DINE'H (NAVAJO) FAMILIES in ARIZONA

We, the undersigned concerned people, protest the United States continued
forced relocation campaign against traditional Dine'h (Navajo) from sacred
lands in Northeastern Arizona. We sincerely ask President Bush to
issue an Executive Order forbidding forced evictions as soon as possible!

Forcing traditional Dine'h to sign unfair leases to stay on Hopi Partition
Lands or be moved to radioactive "New Lands" along the Rio Puerco is
unacceptable! We can do better than "accommodate" our original peoples.

Traditional Dine'h will continue to reject the "Accommodation Agreement"
leases even under threat of eviction because it is a bad solution. Lease
terms limit their traditional sheepherding subsistence and quality of
life. It interferes with their ability to worship and does not allow
burial of their dead alongside their ancestors! It ignored the needs of
future Dine'h generations, who will continue their traditional lifeways.

Dine'h tenants under Hopi jurisdiction are being forced to give up their
ancestoral land claims and their constitutional, civil and human rights in
exchange for a compromised existence under marshall law. As tenants,
traditional Dine'h are still subject to harassment and forced eviction.

Why does the United States continue to make Native Nations struggle for
survival? The US Department of Justice says in exchange for lease
signatures, traditional Dine'h will someday be allowed to repair or
replace their homes, which has been illegal since 1966. Shouldn't
adequate housing be their right, anyway? Why does the US try to force
the Dine'h to give up other rights in order to regain this basic right?

We urge you, President Bush, to create fair and honorable relations
with American Indians, starting with traditional Dine'h (Navajo) families,
mindful of our privilege and prosperity at their expense. We must remedy
our injustices to them and treat them with dignity.

Please issue an Executive Order forbidding forced evictions of the Dine'h!
